Brown fat has several special protein mitochondria that allow them to generate energy directly as heat from fuel molecules instead of channeling it into the formation of the ATP energy carrier.
Circulatory Mechanisms:
The surface of the skin is the key location for the transfer of heat with the environment. The regulation of blood flow to the skin is an essential way of regulating the amount of heat lost to or from the environment.
Vasoconstrictions and vasodilation: In endotherms, as it flows to the surface of the skin, hot blood from the body’s heart tends to lose heat to the atmosphere. Reducing the diameter of the blood vessels supplying the skin decreases blood flow and helps maintain heat, a mechanism known as vasoconstriction. On the other side, these blood vessels become wider, or dilate, when an endotherm wants to get rid of heat, say, after racing hard to avoid a predator, it is called vasodilation. Vasodilation improves the volume of blood throughout the body and makes the animal lose the atmosphere some of its excess heat.
Counter-Current Heat Exchange:
Counter-current heat exchange happens as heat flows to the cooler blood in the veins from the warmer blood in the arteries. Dogs seem to have a mechanism in their feet, in which the arteries and veins in the wolf pelt are very close together, enabling the blood in the veins that have been cooled by interaction with cooler air or soil to heat body heat in the artery. This implies that before going to the body, the blood is warmed up, helping the body to be guarded against any water content and to hold the paws at a steady temperature.
For cooling, this system can also be used. The brain is the area much more at risk of excessive heat; so dogs have another counter-current heat exchanger to the brain between the carotid arteries and vessels; this time the venous blood circulating from the nose and mouth cools the heat from the arterial blood.
Evaporating mechanisms: Vertebrates also lose water through evaporation into the air from their eyes, mouth, and nose. Evaporation eliminates heat and may catalyze cooling. For example, in response to high body temperature, many mammals may cause mechanisms like sweating and panting to increase evaporative cooling. In sweating, water containing different ions is released by glands in the skin-the electrolytes one replenishes with sports drinks.
In panting, to maximize evaporation from the surfaces of the lungs, an animal breathes quickly and shallowly with its mouth open. Both mammals and birds are panting, or at least using similar cooling techniques for breathing. The cooling effect from panting coupled with a counter-current heat exchanger helps prevent the brain from overheating in certain animals such as dogs.
